History of spa treatment

The oldest preserved notice of Carlsbad springs and spas was made in 1522 by the physician Václav Payer from Loket. Two hundred years later in 1722 Dr. David Becher introduced new treatment methods. He identified basic chemical substances in Karlovy Vary water, emphasised the importance of carbon dioxide in the springs, recommended application of the healing water directly at the springs, and reduced the drinking cure dosage considerably. He incorporated diets and outdoor walks in the treatment programmes. However, the basis of spa treatment remains drinking the curative hot mineral water. Other classic water curing procedures are used, as well as baths and modern methods. Carlsbad springs seep from depths of up to 2,000 metres, and the sediment creates spring stones - sinter.
